The best drawing materials for each age

Depending on your child’s age, it is advisable to use different types of material as some require more skill and ability to use them correctly than others.

To encourage your child’s creativity there is nothing better than giving him drawing materials and letting his imagination run free while he draws, colors in, cuts out, or produces all kinds of handicrafts.

There are many painting materials that you can make available to your child, but it is advisable to take in account his age and skills as not all materials are alike or serve the same purpose. According to your child’s age, therefore, we recommend you to buy the following:

Children under 2

  • Soft crayons
  • Finger paint
  • Fat colored pencils
  • Normal crayons

Children of pre-school age (from 3 to 6)

  • Soft and normal crayons
  • Finger paint
  • Colored pencils
  • Marker pens
  • Watercolors
  • Tempera paint
  • Plasticine
  • Rounded scissors

Children older than 6

  • Crayons
  • Marker pens
  • Colored pencils
  • Watercolors
  • Tempera paint
  • Oil paint
  • Normal scissors

Moreover, you should have other kinds of materials for various handicrafts such as cards, EVA rubber, glossy colored art paper, crepe paper, glue, etc. And don’t forget a smock so as not to dirty your clothes!

It is advisable to keep all drawing and handicraft materials together in a box or special trunk arranged in cases and smaller boxes and within your child’s reach so that he can use them whenever he wants to make a new creation.

You should also teach your child to use them properly and to look after them so that they don’t spoil, dry up, or get lost.
